Bob Huey invited Brooke and I to tag along on a China Lake Mountain Rescue Group trip up Mount Tyndall at the end of March. Mt. Tyndall is near Independance in the Eastern Sierras. We started out at about 6,300 ft on Friday morning. We hiked up to about 10,000 ft that day and set up camp. On Saturday we climbed from camp up and over Shepherd Pass (12,000 ft) and then made our way up to the peak of Mt. Tyndall. It was a long day, but we all made it up to the peak. We camped in the same spot that night, and hiked out on Sunday.

Mike, Mike, and Bob relaxing after a long climb up a steep snow chute.

Brooke just before we got to camp. It started snowing right about this time. You can see Owens Valley in the background, about 6,000 ft below us.

Making a flat spot in the snow to set up the tent.

Mike M. on the way up from camp towards Shepherd Pass.

Starting the climb up Shepherd Pass. It was pretty steep, but no problem with crampons and ice axe...

Me on the way up Shepherd Pass.

Everyone at the top of Shepherd Pass.

Our first close-up view of Mt. Tyndall from the top of Shepherd Pass. We climbed up a chute on the right side, then across the ridge line on top to the peak.

Mike M., Bob, and Brooke on the last of the steep climbing before we got to the ridge line.

Bob and Brooke climbing. Getting closer...

Bob on the ridge line that we followed to reach the peak. You can see Owens Valley on the left of the picture, almost 10,000 ft below us now.

Me sitting on the summit block. Mount Williamson is behind me to my right, and Owens Valley to my left

Mount Whitney to the South of us. It was close enough that we could see the hut on top.

Everyone on the top.

Brooke and I on top of Tyndall.

Making our way back down the ridge that we had climbed up.

Brooke glissading down the chute we had climbed up earlier in the day. It sure is easier getting down...

Resting back at camp after a long day.
